Since the beginning, Timber Cannabis Co has been dedicated to philanthropy, giveback campaigns, and staff volunteer hours. We work with our sister company, High Minded Cannabis Co, to create specialty strains that give back to nonprofit organizations doing important work in our communities. We have had specialty strains benefiting veterans, justice-impacted families, folks with cancer and auto-immune disorders, and many other incredible organizations. To date, we have given over $16,000 specifically to LGBTQIA+ nonprofits and hope to add to that total with our newest release: Cadillac Rainbows.
There is a long history of camaraderie between the cannabis movement and the LGBTQIA+ community, and both still fight stigmatization today. In fact, the queer community was instrumental in the legalization of medical cannabis in California, as a response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Starting May 8th, we continue to honor that partnership with the launch of High Minded Cadillac Rainbows products. Proceeds from sales of High Minded Cadillac Rainbows products will be donated to Great Lakes Bay Pride, an organization which works to connect the LGBTQIA+ community with resources, advocate for and educate about the community, and build supportive and inclusive local networks in the Great Lakes Bay region.

Proceeds from Cadillac Rainbows benefit Great Lakes Bay Pride, an LGBTQIA+ nonprofit in the Mt. Pleasant area. Since its inception in 2002, both the area and the organization have come a long way. When Great Lakes Bay Pride was founded, the organization was careful to stay out of the public eye, in the interest of discretion for its members who were not out of the closet. But as the community has evolved, public understanding has too. In fact, Michigan has had a couple of fantastic legislative wins in the last few years, including amending the Michigan Civil Rights Act to include protections for sexual orientation and gender identity, and banning conversion therapy, says Scott Ellis, Executive Director of Great Lakes Bay Pride. In 2016, Great Lakes Bay Pride was asked to take over another organization’s pride festival, which was the catalyst for the organization becoming what it is today – a community center, peer support network, resource directory, and so much more.
Budtender Fred Swinburnson, who has been openly gay for over 20 years and smoking weed for 40, says there has always been a lot of crossover between the two communities. “Everyone I knew who was gay smoked pot. We were both counter-cultures.” Budtender Jessi Anderson agrees, there’s something about cannabis that makes people more open and curious. Jessi is new to Michigan and recently moved here from North Carolina. Coming from a place where she says people would judge first and ask questions later, Jessi has found that weed can help shift conversations and help people approach differences with openness. For Brelynn Woodrick of Higher Hopes, “it’s more than just rainbows.” Not only do we hope to raise awareness and money for our local communities, but hopefully there is education and understanding for our team members as well. “This isn’t just for those who identify as LGBTQIA+” Brelynn says, “we really want all of our employees to understand why equity and inclusion are so important.”
