Women are discovering the benefits of cannabis

Self-Care, Women’s Health, and Michigan Cannabis

Women in Michigan are discovering the therapeutic (and fun) attributes of cannabis.

There’s no denying the spending power of women today. According to a 2018 Bloomberg study, women are responsible for 70-80 percent of all consumer purchasing through a combination of buying power and influence. With the legal marijuana market growing, female consumers are increasingly shaping our industry by accepting cannabis as a product for health and self-care.

“One of the world’s greatest emerging markets is closer than you think. Women are the world’s most powerful consumers, and their economic impact is growing every year. According to global professional services firm EY, the global incomes of women are predicted to reach a staggering $18 trillion by 2018.” – Bloomberg

In states like Michigan, more women are turning to marijuana to take control of their wellness. They are consuming cannabis in higher numbers and increasing the sale of products like edibles, topicals, and tinctures (to name just a few). Michigan’s women are looking for ways to responsibly consume without changing the flow of their lives.

Smoking Cannabis in Michigan

“Four out of ten surveyed female cannabis consumers turn to marijuana as a natural alternative to manage mood swings brought on by menstruation, menopause, or mental health conditions. Relief from pre-menstrual pain as well as cramps also registered as major drivers, with 39% of menopausal consumers choosing cannabis to improve their sleep and 32% choosing cannabis to relieve their symptoms.” – BDS Analytics

Studies show that women are using weed for personal health, and they also consume for pleasure, with 27% of BDS survey respondents saying cannabis enhances intimate experiences.

Other studies reveal that many women turn to cannabis to cope with psychological and social stressors. Whether you’re a woman or a man, marijuana is a potent tool to battle daily anxieties.

Women are starting to realize there’s more to cannabis than getting high.

Women in Michigan experimenting with cannabis for the first time aren’t necessarily interested in getting stoned. They want to sleep and eat better, manage daily pain and anxiety, or, as we alluded to above, have better sex.

While federal cannabis prohibition limits our ability to conduct in-depth research, healthcare professionals and scientists have been able to survey a percentage of cannabis-friendly women in the US. Many say it improves their sex life.

The jury’s out on the exact reasons cannabis impacts women and men differently, at least when it comes to sex. Still, research suggests that “the link between weed and increased female sex drive has to do with three things THC does to the mind and body. It ‘reduces your anxiety, so you might feel more comfortable, and it slows down the perception of time and causes heightened sensations.” (Boston Magazine)

Cannabis is an all-natural PMS remedy.

Women experiencing Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) can have symptoms that range from discomfort to debilitating pain, and cannabis is the best natural remedy. According to a 2008 US National Library of Medicine study, THC has twenty times the anti-inflammatory properties of aspirin, and the relief comes without the gastrointestinal side-effects of an NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug).

Cannabis helps to eliminate the pain, nausea, bloating, and headaches common to PMS. Many women are surprised at just how effective cannabinoids are at combatting these symptoms. Still, science is pretty clear: cannabis targets the cause while also relieving the symptoms.

Perhaps this is why women have been using cannabis to combat period pain for thousands of years.

While men and women tend to have different reasons for consuming cannabis, every adult Michigander can find a reason to include marijuana in their overall self-care and wellness program. Canna-friendly Michigan Women are laser-focused on products that enhance their lives and an industry that continues to pay attention to the needs of the fastest-growing demographic.
